Catalogues of Publishing Houses#

The beginning of the 20th century in Europe was marked by the growing production of gramophone records and gramophones. The earliest Serbian records were made in the first decade of the 20th century in Belgrade when the Gramophone Record Company visited the Balkans. In the early stages of the sound industry development, the record labels contained scarce and often inaccurate information about the authors, performers and works (the cover mainly contained advertisements of the company, new gramophones or newly-published records). #

Publishing house catalogues provide a more detailed and accurate insight into the publishing production. In addition to basic information regarding the works and performers, record descriptions contained the publishing house catalogue number and the recording number, which are useful for researchers dealing with this topic.#

Mita Đ. Palić, a merchant from Pančevo, spoke about the importance of publishing and selling Serbian gramophone records in his store: “In 1907, I registered a store selling gramophones and records. In it, my Serbian brothers can buy the works of famous Serbian artists and singing societies instead of spending money on foreign works and at foreign stores.”#
