Many would agree that Bosiljka Kićevac (1932-2016) is the “first lady” of illustration in Serbia. In parallel with illustration as her primary artistic orientation, she was involved in creating graphic arts, inlays, unique carpet designs, textile projects and painting. She graduated from the Academy of Applied Arts in Belgrade in 1956, where she also completed her postgraduate studies. She was a part of the Belgrade art scene for more than four decades. She organized over twenty solo exhibitions and took part in many national and international exhibitions, such as "The Golden Pen of Belgrade", "October Salon" and “May Salon” by ULUPUDS, " BIB International Exhibition of Illustration", "International Exhibition of Illustration" in Bologna and Leipzig Book Fair. She won valuable awards for her outstanding illustrative work, including the October Salon Award, the Neven Award for the most successful book for children, the Politika Award from the Vladislav Ribnikar Fund, three awards at Golden Pen of Belgrade illustration exhibitions, the ULUPUDS lifetime achievement Award and the Vuk Stefanović Karadžić Endowment Award. Kićevac illustrated more than 170 books for children and the youth for the most prestigious publishing houses in Serbia, Yugoslavia and the entire world. She was a long-term contributor to many prestigious children's magazines, such as "Poletarac", "Zmaj", "Kekec", "Neven", "Mali Kekec", "Politikin zabavnik" and "Zeka", which marked the childhood of post-war generations. She breathed life into texts of books, textbooks, picture books for the youngest audience, folk tales and filmstrips employing recognizable illustrations that bear her unique stamp. Through a series of linocuts, she presented her vision of Belgrade and provided a special graphic interpretation of Vuk's proverbs. She depicted the scenes of Kalemgdan, Dubrovnik, Brač and Sutivan. She stood out in the field of applied graphic art with her witty and original bookplates. Bosiljka Kićevac’s legacy is kept at the National Library of Serbia, which consists of original illustrations, graphic arts, drawings and sketches, a part of the personal library, awards, recognitions and archival material.
