The collection of handwritten periodicals belongs to the collection of younger manuscripts in the collection of the National Library of Serbia. Their systematical gathering began after the bombardment of the library on 6 April 1941. Our digital collection contains 43 titles.
Serbian handwritten periodicals were created when there were no other options to present the written word to readers, most often due to wars and extraordinary circumstances or in periods of material, logistical and technical depravity. They spawned during times of war and peace, at most diverse places, including taverns, prisons, schools, front lines or prison camps, etc. They were written and edited by students and the youth, political prisoners, theologians, soldiers, war prisoners and others. These periodicals represent an invaluable testimony to the upswing of the student and youth organisations, humour in tough times, patriotism and philanthropy, moral decay and the multi-decade struggle of the Serbian people for the preservation of moral identity.
Chronologically, the Collection of Serbian Handwritten Periodicals can be divided into six periods, according to the date of creation: 1) The period before the Balkan Wars (until 1912); 2) The Balkan War period (1912-1913); 3) The First World War period (1914-1918); 4) The period between the two World Wars; 5) The Second World War period (1941-1945) and 6) the post-war period (from 1945). The oldest periodical dates back to 1874 and the youngest periodical dates from 1995.
According to the type of periodical, the collection contains truly handwritten periodicals and typewritten periodicals. According to originality, the collection consists of originals and multi-originals, i.e. items that are handwritten in essence but are multiplied in various ways (hectographs, lithographs, heliographs and copies).
According to specific characteristics, rarity and uniqueness of collection items, the creation date and people who edited and participated in the process of publishing, the collection has an undeniable cultural, historical and documentary value. According to the number of preserved copies, each title represents a true bibliographic rarity.
