In Serbian literature, the period between the end of the 19th century and the end of the First World War is usually called Moderna. The poetry of this period is dominated by the beauty cult, the perfection of form and aestheticism. Bogdan Popović, one of the most influential literary critics of the first half of the 20th century, published the Anthology of New Serbian Lyricism in 1911, following strict aesthetic criteria. The authors included in the Anthology became the role-models for others. In addition to the Anthology of New Serbian Lyricism, the collection contains the works of certain authors chosen by Popović, who believed they met the criteria of creating “poetry beautiful in its entirety”. Amongst them, there are some of the nowadays somewhat forgotten poets: Milorad Mitrović, Milan Ćurčin, Danica Marković, Mirko Korolija, etc. |
